Whitehouse
General Overview The Village of Whitehouse, population 3,000, is located in the southeastern portion of Lucas County. The majority of the village land is residential with a small percentage of commercial and industrial uses. Whitehouse's cost of living is 2.63% lower than the U.S. average. History The area known as the Village of Whitehouse has been the home to various Native American tribes including the Miami, Ottawa, Shawnee, Wyandot, and Delaware. Many farmers of Dutch and German descent settled in the area to take advantage of its arable land. In 1853, the community was sold to the Toledo-Illinois Railroad which connected the Maumee Valley to Danville, Illinois. In July,1864, the town plat was officially recorded. Edward Whitehouse, treasurer of the Wabash Railroad, and his wife, donated the land for the village green, now known as Whitehouse Park. The Anthony Wayne School District was formed in 1950, consolidating Whitehouse, Monclova and Waterville Schools. In 1969, a log house, built in the mid 1800s, was uncovered on SR. 64 and Shepler Street and is currently used by the community's schools as part of its history curriculum. Government Services The Village of Whitehouse is run by a mayor and six-member city council. The Whitehouse Police Department consists of six full-time and seven part-time patrol officers. The department has two school resource officers who are available to all schools in the village. Whitehouse is served by its own fire department. Employment The majority of Whitehouse residents are employed in construction, transportation equipment, educational services, health care, administrative support, professional, scientific and technical services, retail and hospitality. Parks include the Nona France Recreation Area, Oak Openings and Village Park. The Wabash Cannonball Trail is a 63 mile, multi-use recreational trail open to hikers, bikers, equestrians and cross-country skiers.
