Maumee

General Overview
The city of Maumee is located in Lucas County, Ohio, just south of Toledo. The city has long been a transportation hub due to its location along the north bank of the Maumee River. In 2006, Maumee won the All America? City Award from the National Civic League and was named by Frommer's as one of the 100 best places to raise a family in America. Ohio Magazine designated Maumee as one of "Ohio's Five Best Hometowns." Maumee's cost of living is 7.34% lower than the U.S. average.

History
The Ottawa Indians were among the first people to settle in the Maumee River Valley. Throughout the 18th century, the French, British and Americans fought to control the area in order to hold rights to the river which served as a major transportation link between the eastern and western U.S. By the 1820s, the area was recognized for its strategic location connecting Lake Erie to points west. With the opening of the Erie Canal in 1840, Maumee became a thriving commercial center.

Maumee was chartered in 1838 and then chosen as the county seat of Lucas County in 1840. That honor was taken away in 1854 as the town suffered a decline in trade due to the emergence of railroads over ships as a faster and more economical way of transporting goods. It wasn't until the 1970s that Maumee re-emerged as a prosperous business center. Today the city has 15,000 residents and 30,000 jobs located within the city limits.
